These workshops explore divorce and relationship breakdown from a relational perspective, with an emphasis on how psychotherapy can help through this painful and often devastating process.

In the first workshop we will be examining the development of a couple’s relationship and the psychological causes of relationship breakdown. We will briefly explore the effects of divorce from the perspective of the person choosing to leave the relationship, as well as when there is a mutually agreed relationship breakdown.

The second workshop focuses on the impact of an unwanted divorce on the person who has been left, and the psychotherapeutic needs of someone going through this very individual and specific loss and grief. Although integrated, both workshops can be attended as a stand-alone workshop.

The workshops will have an integrative relational perspective with a focus on Transactional Analysis, although prior knowledge of TA is not essential. Using client examples, we will explore the importance of the therapeutic relationship for those going through divorce; we will examine how using this relationship can offer the potential for significant intrapsychic and interpersonal change through this traumatic and transformative period in our clients’ lives.

This online workshop offers an introduction to a relational way of working with transactional analysis, placing the relationship between client and practitioner at the centre of the therapeutic journey. It is aimed at trainees, as well as qualified practitioners who have limited experience of relational TA or those who would like a refresher. Participants will be encouraged to bring and discuss active case studies in a safe and non-judgemental environment to enhance their learning experience. • The background and history of relational TA and its psychoanalytic roots
    • The basic principles of relational TA
    • Working ethically when working relationally

These are aimed at TA trainees who want to revise key transactional analysis concepts and to be updated on new theories emerging in TA. They will be useful for trainees from Year 2 onwards, once the basic theories have been studied and clinical work has started. Trainees working towards their Diploma or CTA dissertation and viva may find them particularly helpful to consolidate understanding.

Participants will be encouraged to bring and discuss active case studies and/or tapes of their work in a safe and non-judgemental environment to enhance their learning experience. Through exploration of these case presentations, as well as theoretical teaching and discussion, we will aim to link theory to practice and help integrate a personal style of psychotherapy. Sessions can be attended as a stand-alone workshop or as a whole series. Numbers will be limited to ensure a personal learning experience.
